Can your car kill you and your family?
UPDATE 1/30/10 - Toyota has stopped production, sales and recalled any vehicle with the faulty accelerator pedal. Thank you Toyota for actually admitting that and taking action, although it was a bit delayed. Read more from Toyota here How safe is it when the car itself now controls more of the driving than the driver? With today's combination of a drive by wire throttle pedal, electronic wheel speed sensors, rev limiters and electronic brake control do you really feel safe and in control? I'm not sure I do anymore. The reason this topic came up is because of a tragic event recently ...
Bonneville Speed Week 2009
Bonneville Speed Week 2009 was an overall success. We got Sal's 53 Mainline set up with a better ratio rear end (3:50 from a 4:10), a T5 5 speed transmission and the race flathead. We weren't aiming to take the record of 140mph but rather hit a preset goal. That goal was 120. After replacing the cam, broken lifter and a bit of valve work the 296 was ready to go racing again. And when it was fired up for the first time it sure did sound amazing and a bit rowdy at the same time. Granted it wasn't as rowdy ...
Are Top Gear’s budget cuts noticeable?
UPDATE August 3rd 2009 - Top Gear UK has NOT been cancelled. I've gotten a lot of questions and searches about that one question. Jeremy's ending to episode 7 led people to believe that it was all over. He just meant for the breed of car that an Aston Martin is. It just wont be the same if it was all electric or hybrid or even diesel, just not the same. -- Top Gear went through some budget cuts this year much like the rest of the BBC. Reportedly if you made over 100k (British pounds) then you were 'required' to take ...
The Audi S5, is it worth the price?
By the way the Audi looks it would be worth the price, but looks aren't everything. The Audi's looks obviously are not lacking but does it lack in performance? The A5 comes with a 265hp 3.2 liter V6 and the S5 comes with 354hp 4.2 liter V8. Both are respectable powerplant but I think in a car that weighs nearly two tons you would need the S5's 354hp option if you want to get German car performance you'd be expecting.. The Audi S5 ramps up to 60 to just under 5 seconds. The A5 can do the same in ...
Ford takes the Mustang to Japan, to drift?
Yes it's true. Check out some video; The player will show in this paragraph I have to admit it was a brave move to go to Japan with a Mustang and assume they will accept the unrefined grunt of the 550hp supercharged American beast. I think it worked out for the best. It could have gone much worse. Going to the Japanese with your product for their sport can make for a great video series. The Mustang did very well and genuinely impressed the locals. You can see the genuine reactions of the people in the Ford videos. Drifting has been around Japan ...
Race day, well sort of
After running late as usual, we did make it to El Mirage Saturday at sundown. Everyone put in a lot of hard work to get the car done and thanks to Sal Barbier for wanting to race the '53 Mainline. After passing inspection we were all able to breathe a little easier even with all the dust. A short night of socializing and BBQ we were up early the next day and I was prepping to drive. [caption id="attachment_504" align="aligncenter" width="225" caption="Safety equipment"][/caption] A lot of time went in making the car race ready, track worthy and most of all safe. All ...
Why electric only cars will never work
Well at least not here in the States. 'All electric' cars are a good start to what we as a global community need to do to be responsible for cleaner planet. They do work for a small percentage of us. They do have a few major flaws though. I have been a pretty big critic of the Prius and the technology it uses, and especially why manufacturers keep developing gasoline-electric hybrids. Why not mix in the more efficient and longer lasting diesel engine? Also the battery's impact on the environment has never been publicly documented from the point of material sourcing ...
